The Program / Department / Team

Jordan grapples with escalating climate-related disasters, posing a critical challenge to its humanitarian efforts, economic stability, and environmental integrity. Despite its position as one of the world's most water-scarce nations, Jordan is witnessing a distressing surge in flash floods. Factors such as degraded vegetation, haphazard urbanization, and the relentless impact of climate change worsen these floods, devastating local communities and the eco-tourism sector. Moreover, Jordan suffers from.

 

Since 2021, Mercy Corps Jordan has been working to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities against the impacts of climate change. The Tabeaa ( طبيعة( : Strengthening Climate Resilience in Jordanian Communities project, planned to start in 2025, builds on this commitment, aligning with Mercy Corps’ vision of fostering resilient communities capable of thriving amid climate challenges.

 

The project’s approach is multi-faceted, focusing on three key areas: building the adaptive capacity of Jordanian communities, ensuring effective localization and enforcement of national climate policies, and increasing investments in climate resilience initiatives. By integrating these elements, the Tabeaa project seeks to create a sustainable, inclusive response to climate change, in line with Mercy Corps’ mission to strengthen resilience among vulnerable communities in Jordan. The Tabeaa project will operate both at the national and local community levels. Nationally, it will engage key stakeholders to drive systemic change by localizing and enforcing Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies. At the community level, the project will target five communities across different governorates, selected for their high vulnerability to flash floods, heatwaves, and water scarcity, which are exacerbated by climate change and impede their ability to thrive.

 

The Position

The Project assistant is responsible for the implementation of Tabeaa Project activities. S/he will serve as a primary contact person for the project participants and will coordinate their participation in the project. S/he will also be responsible for monitoring the achievement of the results set by the project in his/her area of responsibility. Project assistant will also be tasked with data collection, surveys, submitting progress reports and making logistics arrangements in cooperation with other Mercy Corps staff.

 

Essential Responsibilities

• Create and update calendars, schedule meetings, site visits and other logistical arrangements as needed.

• Create online tracking sheets and logs for all paperwork related to project activities and keep it updated.

• Process, follow up on and track project procurement processes to initiate process and close it, this includes participation and attendance in bid preparation, tendering, technical evaluation, contracts award and all related meetings and logistical arrangements.

• Coordinate with other team members, departments, suppliers, and communities for any delivery of goods and/or services.

• Travel to project locations as planned and required in coordination with Tabeaa team for day- to-day implementation of project activities

• Maintain a soft and hard filing system in accordance with Mercy Corps Policies and Procedures.

• Ensure compliance with Mercy Corps, donor policies and communication protocols, and ensure the successful implementation of agreed upon activities.

• Attending project meetings instructed by supervisor.

• Document all program activities, achievements, and challenges on project tracking sheets and in weekly/monthly reports.

• Submit required reports (field visit reports, activity reports, weekly reports) to the direct supervisor.

• Ensure proper visibility of project activities and support the facilitation of media products development and success stories documentation.

• Ensure efficient support for community work activities by preparing necessary documentation, including attendance sheets, payment processing, and cash advance arrangements, volunteer contracts.

 

Others:

• Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.

• Other duties as assigned by the direct Supervisor and/or the Pillar Director.

 

SECURITY

• Carry with you the Jordan Constant Companion form especially when in the field.

• When planning a field visit, and if a driver is not available, drive Mercy Corps vehicle ensuring to adhere to safe driving practices and road speed limits.

• In all emergency situations, after ensuring all staff is safe and calling the emergency services, if necessary, contact the Security Focal Points (SFP) and make an Immediately Oral Incident Report.

• Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by country leadership.

 

SAFEGAURDING RESPONSIBILITIES

• Actively learns about safeguarding and integrates it into their work, including safeguarding risks and mitigations related to their area of work

• Practices the values of Mercy Corps including respecting the dignity and well-being of participants and fellow team members

• Encourages openness and communication in their team; encourages team members to submit reports if they have any concerns using reporting mechanisms e.g., Integrity Hotline and other options.

 

Supervisory Responsibility

None.

 

Accountability

Reports Directly To: Project Officer

Works Directly With: Tabeaa project team, Targeted communities, MC support departments (Engineering department, PAQ, Finance, Admin and Procurement teams), consultants.

 

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

 

Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

● Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business administration, or related technical field.

● 0 - 2 years of experience in project management/implementation environment.

● Excellent oral and written communication skills

● Familiarity with data collection, monitoring and evaluation, and quality control tools is desirable.

● Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.

● Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel and Word.

● Strong interest in the field of community engagement and climate change

Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions

The position is based in Amman, Jordan. Frequent domestic travel to the field from Amman will be required. Upon the instructions and approval of the supervisor.
